Billy Graham's Mom

Billy Graham tells the story of admitting to his mom that he knows God is real and near, but doesn’t always feel it. Mrs. Graham responded, “When God doesn’t feel near, He’s probably the nearest—and asking you to walk in ‘super faith’ as He walks with you.”

At some level that’s a truth to embrace, yet at the same time encouraging.

For the last 15 days, Nicole has been struggling with debilitating high fevers. What we were hoping would be a nice break in chemo at home to spend time with the kids turned into 15 days of misery and bitter discouragement. 15 days that decimated her energy. Yet at the same time, I’ve been so proud to see my wife handle this pain with class and spiritual vitality. Though she’s been dealt a rough hand, she’s clinging to the goodness of God and pressing into Him.

Today we started the second round of chemo. We’re hoping this breaks the fevers up and ushers in a new chapter. Likely a chapter with new challenges, but our hope is that these new challenges allow her to be on her feet.

Regardless, Billy’s mom is right. Though God didn’t “feel” all that close these last 15 days, He’s closer than ever. I’m proud to see Nicole take His invite to walk in faith and keep her chin up.
