Rod & Staff

Years ago, I did a funeral and read the verse, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me…” My youngest was sitting in the front row, and on the ride home she asked me, “Why didn’t you say the rest of the verse? ‘Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.'” That kid was on to something…

It’s interesting, David doesn’t mention the “rod and staff” in green pastures but in the dark valley. The rod was used to protect the sheep against predators, while the staff was used to guide. The rod and staff were most needed in the difficult parts of the road; and they weren’t always gentle, but they did provide comfort.

This week we felt that rod and staff.

On Monday, Nicole spiked a fever. Since her immunity is quite low, it was a temperature she couldn’t afford. After 7 hours in the ER, we were admitted back into the hospital.

The fever was certainly uncomfortable and unwanted, but it also guided the doctors to find a blood clot in Nicole’s lung. Our hope is that we walk out of the hospital in much better condition, thanks to the uncomfortable fever.

So often, that which brings temporary fear and pain becomes the very thing that guides us to better positions. His rod and His staff, they comfort us.
